Celebrating Pride Month with True Self Foundation- A Nonprofit Offering Low-Cost Gender-Affirming Treatments

Pride Month- True Self Foundation - an organization offering low-cost gender-affirming treatments

Pride Day is commemorated on June 28 as a sub-holiday during Pride Month. The day commemorates the first pride march in New York City, which took place in 1970. Different communities, on the other hand, observe Pride Day on various days throughout June. Brenda Howard, a bisexual activist, is often credited with founding Pride Month. Brenda, dubbed “The Mother of Pride,” founded Gay Pride Week and the Christopher Street Liberation Day Parade a year after the Stonewall Riots. This later evolved into the New York City Pride March, which served as a catalyst for the establishment of similar parades and marches around the world.

In our ‘Pride Month’ interview series, we had a conversation with Ah Qiang, founder of True Self Foundation. A nonprofit that strives to promote LGBTQ+ communities in Puerto Rico, focusing on trans, queer, and non-binary people. True Self is one of the island’s only organizations of its kind, offering free or low-cost gender-affirming treatments to gender-diverse Puerto Ricans.

Q
In your opinion, what does Pride month mean?

Ah Qiang: The goal of Pride Month is to get more people to join us in accepting who they are and celebrating it with pride. It’s crucial since the majority of LGBTQ+ persons all over the world are unaware of their rights. The situation is not ideal. So it’s a celebration of our uniqueness for me.

Q
How does your organization work for the cause?

Ah Qiang: So, for True Self, we are getting support from different parts. Some foundations support our cause, though most of their funding. For the individual people from the LGBTQ+, people we have nearly 3000 supporters. We call the monthly donation for us 70% from their Muslim tradition, and some foundations act as a few suppliers. But we do love how the resource from the government is low and slow. Still, we manage to support our work and work for the LGBTQ+ community.

Q
hat are some myths associated with this community?

Ah Qiang: There are many misconceptions about the LGBTQ+ community. Parents believe that their children’s sexual orientation can be changed. In Chinese culture, sexual inclination is regarded as an illness. Marriage has been referred to as a cure for this. Individuals are even killed to not compromise the clan’s dignity. Unfortunately, these things continue to occur in the postmodern world as well. Things like these make even the simple act of living tough for this community.

Q
In what ways can we make the lives of LGBTQ+ individuals easier?

Ah Qiang: Self-acceptance is crucial, and I believe it is the first step. But people have a hard time embracing sexual orientation or gender in the early stage. This is something that a person can accomplish for themself. Once they have achieved that, the next step involves coming out to the world. This should be a simple process. So we must take as many actions as possible to help them enhance their self-acceptance. We can help them strengthen their relationships with their relatives.

Apart from this, there is an extensive list of things we can do for the people of this community. People can join our bands and support and counsel others according to our criteria. We have a helpline to answer people’s questions. You can help them psychologically. Be a pillar of strength for them. Make children aware of their rights and allow them to have their personal space. These may appear simple, yet it is precisely what is required.
